What is blooming there??
When different species or varieties from the Paph. appletonianum complex are in bloom, identifying the individual species becomes difficult. It becomes even more interesting when flowers from the Paph. bullenianum complex (here: Paph. linii) are seen. What could be blooming here?
the solution:
It becomes a little easier if you compare only a few species:
A comparison between Paph. wolterianum and Paph. wolterianum var. schmidtianum (Paph. schmidtianum)
The map shows where these species originate - Paph. wolterianum var schmidtianum comes from the island of Koh Chang:
A comparison between Paph. appletonianum and Paph. hainanense (Paph. appletonianum var. hainanense)
and a comparison between Paph. appletonianum and Paph. wolterianum
Paph. appletonianum
In fact, it's difficult to correctly classify these individual species. It helps to compare the individual plants on this website with the details shown here under the "Species" tab. It would also be nice if the places of origin of the individual plants were known.
However, some taxonomists classify some species as synonyms of Paph. appletonianum. I see this attitude as problematic if these plants are intended to be propagated purely as a species – otherwise, you simply end up with hybrids.
