Here is a report from Mr. Hermann (Holland - later residence in Thailand) in the SlipperTalk forum:

Norris H. Powell from Orchid House (USA) visited Dutch nurseries with me in the early 1980s on the occasion of the European Orchid Congress.

When we arrived at Jac Falstar's nursery in Naaldwijk near Rotterdam, Norris couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the tens of thousands of Paph species.
paper callosum in three different species, Paph. gratixianum from Laos, Paph. concolor, Paph. sukhahulii, Paph. level and paph. fairrianum.

Norris began by selecting the Paph. fairrianums first - he selected about 50 different fairrianums - all plants were collected from the jungle [Holland only joined CITES in 1989].

Then we went over to the Paph. callosum (originating from Laos) and there were two or three very dark colored plants. Norris asked how much these plants will cost and if Jac Falstar would be willing to part with them. Falstar replied that he was that color of Paph. callosum and he gave these plants to Powell as a gift. Powell then gave these few plants the cultivar name: Paph. callosum 'Jac'.

Nobody knew at that moment that these plants would represent completely new building blocks for a color in hybrid breeding - the Vinicolors.

I have never heard of any other dark callosum plants, although millions of plants were imported into the Netherlands at the time.

I think everyone else Paph. callosum Vinicolor from selfings of the above mentioned plants.
