Paphiopedilum burbidgei

Synonym: Paph. dayanum var. burbidgei

 

Paph. dayanum only grows in Sabah (Malaysia) on Borneo on Mt. Kinabalu.

Dr. FOWLIE has sites from Paph. dayanum and found that this plant occurs at different altitudes. The so-called lowland form is found at altitudes of 550 m and makes large flowers of 17 cm. It is therefore often described as a "real" dayanum.

The highland form occurs at altitudes of around 1100 m and has a different leaf color (see picture) - the flower also "only" reaches 12 cm.
This "variety" is also known as Paph. burbidgei has been described but is not recognized by many taxonomists.

Furthermore, a Paph. petri has been described from this location, but it is possibly a natural hybrid between Paph. dayanum and Paph. virens.

Fortunately, both "types" have been propagated, but unfortunately both types have been "crossed" with each other due to ignorance of the localities.
