Paphiopedilum ziekianum   SCHOSER

Section: Barbata

Synonym: Paph. papuanum

The Paphiopedilum described below is occasionally referred to as Paph. papuanum or Paph. Ziekianum offered.

In June 1961, Mr. Jr. sent J.F.U. Zieck from Manokwari (New Guinea - Vogelkopf) sent a letter to Zijll de Jong with some notes, sketches and a dried flower from a paphiopedilum collected in the Arfak Mountains (south of Manokwari). A short time later, a few plants were sent to the botanical gardens in Leiden and Cologne.

In May 1966, Mr. de Jong gave the above letter to Dr. Schoser with the request to determine this Paphio.

The few plants had died in the meantime, so that Dr. Schoser this Paphiopedilum based on the sketches and the dried flower as Paph. zieckianum described. Further details can be found in the magazine "Die Orchidee" issue 1, 1967.

A few years later, Henry Azadehdel and Paul Mattes attempted to find that Paph. zieckianum again. After some trouble, they were able to find some plants from it and brought back few plants which were placed in the care of botanical gardens.

After plants flowered from it, Dr. Philip Cribb and Dr. Jack Fowlie that this lady's slipper is probably the lost Paph. papuanum (Orchid Digest, Issue 1 /1988).

The majority of taxonomists today see the Paph. zieckianum only as a synonym of Paph. papuanum on. Nevertheless, these plants are still called in Germany Paph. ziekianum propagated and sold. For this reason and to make it easier to find, I have also classified these plants here under this name.

Here is a picture from the Orchid Digest (issue 5, 1967) usesd by Dr. Schoser from a dia slide:

Here are the plants collected by Mattes / Azadehdel ( Orchid Digest, 4 / 1988 )

In the culture is Paph. ziekianum rather difficult. When propagated in in vitro culture, the small seedlings grow slowly. When bottling, there are usually large losses - the right way for a successful establishment of the seedlings has yet to be found.
