In 2008, Aran Petschleung discovered a supposedly new species in Yunnan Province—specifically the Wenshan District (China)—that differed significantly from *Paph. dianthum*. Examination of the ten plants he found revealed differences from *Paph. dianthum*, particularly regarding the entirely greenish petals and sepals; the linear petals—which were notably broader, shorter, and untwisted, and lacked black warts; the rounded lip; and the sharply triangular staminode.

In Petschleung's opinion, these criteria are sufficient to describe a new species.

 

 

Some taxonomists now consider this species as a synonym for Paph. considered dianthum.
